Movie Trailer App
Project Overview: Film lovers and casual watchers have problems with finding local films and watching trailers without the trailer exposing too much. The Goal is to Design an app that allows users to find local theaters, watch trailers, and purchase tickets.
Summary: I conducted interviews to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through research was film lovers and casual movie watchers. User research revealed that being able to navigate an app smooth as possible is very important factor in using a movie theater app. Other problems included were color schemes for the eyes, sizes of icons, and access to trailers.
User Personas
Bennie
Bennie is a musician who loves to watch artistically creative movies. Benne wants an app with teaser trailers for independent films because movie apps give too much recognition to major movies in the industry.
Aj
AJ is a Film student who wants an app with good trailers available because movie trailers reveal too much on the film.
Key Insights/ Pain Points
Trailers
Film lovers and casual watchers have problems with finding a trailer that does not reveal too much of the movie.
Navigation
Movie Theater apps usually don't have the easiest means of navigating through the app.
Icon Sizes
Icon sizes are common issues when using the app.
Initial Wireframes
The goal was to insure one trailer was available that did not reveal too much information on the movie. The intension of the design was to keep everything simple and straight to the point. anything else would make the site complicated. Also icon size and icon choice was considered for ease of navigation
Usability Findings: conducted two rounds of usability studies. Findings from the first study helped guide the designs from wireframes to mockups. The second study used a high-fidelity prototype and revealed what aspects of the mockups needed refining.
Round 1:
Needed noticeable call to action buttons for older users.
Color scheme of app must be cool colors to be easy to look at
Round 2:
Increase the font sizes for users with different levels of eyesight
Changes made:
Color schemes definitely play a role in how an app feels to a user. Using cooler colors makes the app more inviting.
Simple things like being able to go back home when the ticket is purchase makes the app easier to use, the first mockup made the user stuck on the page until they used the ticket.
Also made text bigger for users with poor vision see what they are looking at/for.
Final Solutions
Challenges & Takeaways
Challenges faced were understanding making design changes for user with accessibility issues. Having to update color scheme, icon sizes and choices played a huge factor in making sure the app is available for many types of users to use.
